Shauna - Devil’s Churn
When Devil’s Churn Caramel first approached me about photographing their products, I was immediately intrigued by the name. A little research revealed that it is inspired by The Devil's Churn in Ballycastle in Northern Ireland—a dramatic natural sea cave that was once part of 18th–19th century salt works. It’s a fitting name for a brand offering salted caramel.
At the time they commissioned us for the shoot, Devil’s Churn was in the midst of a rebrand. It took a few months before we could begin photographing, but this delay proved to be creatively fruitful. We exchanged ideas regularly, refining the vision until I had a strong sense of what the client was looking for.
Working on this shoot was an absolute joy. The client were very clear in their vision and I loved the new branding. I made sure to stay closely in touch with the client throughout the process to ensure they were happy with the art direction. Of the concepts I proposed, they were especially drawn to a dark and moody aesthetic—something that would evoke a sense of cosy indulgence and comfort when enjoying their caramel. However, when it came to photographing the ice cream pairing, I chose a light-coloured background to highlight the product’s versatility and show that it can also be enjoyed with cold desserts like ice cream.
Devil’s Churn offers five flavours in two different jar sizes. For each one, we created a distinct lifestyle image that highlights how the caramel can be enjoyed with different foods.
As a food photographer based in Northern Ireland with a background in design, I love coming up with ideas and food styling that makes viewers want to reach through the screen and taste the product. I am certain I have succeeded in doing just that.
As well as lifestyle food shots, the client also required product listing shots for their online shop. I photographed all flavours in two different sizes together with group shots of all flavours on pure white background.
As you can see from the above comment, the client was very happy with the results of this food photoshoot. If you have a similar projects in mind, please feel free to get in touch—I'd be happy to discuss it with no obligation.
